Description
The Deep super Langstroth hive is one of the most commonly used hive designs in beekeeping, and it consists of several components, including deep supers. At Yatta Beekeepers we use well seasoned pine wood to construct our beehives Here are the specifications and components of a deep super Langstroth beehive:
- Brood Box: The deep super is the lower box of the Langstroth hive and is designed to hold the brood chamber, where the queen bee lays her eggs, and where worker bees raise brood (young bees). The dimensions of a deep super are typically around 19 7/8 inches (50.5 cm) in length, 16 inches in width, and 9 5/8 inches (24.4 cm) in depth.
- Frames: Inside the deep super, frames are placed vertically. They are self spacing to ease the process of extraction and inspection. These frames typically have dimensions of 8.5 inches in height and 19 inches (48.3 cm) in length. They are designed to hold the honeycomb where bees store honey and pollen and raise brood.
- Foundation: Frames often have a foundation, which can be either plastic or wax-coated, to provide a base for the bees to build their comb.
- Inner Cover: The inner cover is placed on top of the deep super and provides ventilation and insulation for the hive.
- Telescoping Outer Cover: The outer cover fits over the inner cover and provides protection from the elements, such as rain and wind.
- Bottom Board: The bottom board is the base of the hive, upon which the rest of the hive components sit. It may have an entrance reducer to help control the hive’s entrance size.
